Yesterday, I had the pleasure of running a video content workshop in Sunderland as part of UK Start Up & Scale Up Week – and let me tell you, it was such a brilliant room of people!
From early-stage start-ups to growing businesses, we had attendees from all walks of life, and they all had one big question: “How do I actually make video work for me?”
So, whether you couldn’t make it or just want a little recap, here’s a rundown of some of the key takeaways we covered in the session:
1. Video can boost your sales – seriously.
This isn’t just about being visible or “getting your name out there.” When done right, video has a direct impact on sales.
People buy from people – and video helps your audience see you, hear you, and trust you faster.
A simple 30-second explainer, a behind-the-scenes snippet, or a quick product demo can often do more than a paragraph of polished website copy.
It’s not about producing Oscar-worthy films – it’s about making content that moves people to take action.
2. Keep it simple
One of the biggest mindset shifts we talked about was this: you don’t need loads of kit or a polished studio setup to get started.
In fact, some of the most engaging content is filmed on a phone, using natural light, and fuelled by a genuine message.
If you can answer a question your customers often ask, show how something works, or share a quick tip – you’ve already got a content strategy.
3. You already have everything you need
No need to wait until you have “the right camera” or a content calendar planned out for the year.
Start small, start today.
In the workshop, we worked on simple content ideas that anyone could go away and try immediately. Most people were surprised at how much they could do with what they already had – a phone, an idea, and a bit of confidence.
4. Trust beats algorithms
We talked about why video builds trust faster than any other type of content.
When people see your face, hear your voice, and understand your approach, they’re far more likely to remember you – and reach out when they’re ready to buy.
You don’t need to go viral. You just need to show up consistently, be helpful, and be human.
If you left the session feeling inspired – amazing! And if you couldn’t make it, don’t worry – there are more sessions coming soon. But in the meantime, if you’ve been thinking about how video could work for your business, I’d love to chat.
Let’s figure out what’s possible together.
